Kept hearing for decades about how other people think our food is trash now they get to embrace the comfort and warmth that comes from immigrants just getting to go hog wild with dishes. The old country is gone, welcome to America

Biscuits and gravy truly is one of the most unappetizing looking dishes, while also being the thing I will always order because it’s amazing.

Biscuits and Gravy has a unique attribute that few foods possess: the worse it looks, the better it is.

In Atlanta is a funky diner called Home grown. There is always a line, but if you go alone you can typically snag a counter spot faster.
The menu is deep, with typical diner breakfast items, lunch items, and they even have daily specials that always sound so enticing.
But every time I go, I get the Comfy Chicken Biscuit: a fresh, open faced biscuit, topped with perfectly fried chicken tenders, both of which are covered in a decadent white sausage gravy. Each bite is a moment of pure, culinary bliss, as all three elements are amazing, but you attempt to get that ultimate bite with the perfect amount of all 3. Those in the know also order the home fries with peppers and onions, which add new textures and flavors to the experience.
It is also a huge amount of food, and I always take enough home for breakfast the next morning.

Funny thing is, I would go with my older brother and dad to Hardee’s every weekend, because my dad would meet up with an elderly couple who were always there.
They would always order biscuits and gravy and I would order the cinnamon raisin biscuits, or Roy Rogers chicken when Hardee’s still sold it if we stayed until lunch.
I always thought the biscuits and gravy looked so gross.
I finally tried it when I was in my early 20s.
My reaction was much like this man’s, but not nearly as poetic.
