The Grand Egyptian Museum, located next to the Giza Pyramids, is the largest museum in the world and the largest dedicated to Egyptian civilization. Its construction cost $1.2 billion, and it opened in 2025.

To avoid any controversy, the Grand Egyptian Museum is the largest overall, but not necessarily the largest in terms of exhibition space. It has a children’s museum, a restoration center, restaurants, and shops. The museum houses over 100,000 artifacts, including the complete Tutankhamun collection in dedicated halls. This collection had never been displayed before, not even in the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, due to space constraints at the time. The museum achieved record numbers, attracting over 18,000 visitors on its opening day alone. On some days, the number reached 40,000 and even 50,000, exceeding the museum’s capacity. This led to a complete shift to online pre-booking.

t is an absolutely breathtaking architectural masterpiece. Standing right next to the pyramids, it perfectly bridges Egypt’s ancient history with the modern world.

Make sure you get a crappy photo using your phone. That Tutankhamen mask is hardly very pictured in photography.

It’s crazy to think that Cleopatra is closer to us than she was to the Great Pyramids, Egypt was already ancient by then. A fitting display.

20 years ago I visited the National Museum in Cairo and I remember everything was cramped. Good to know that the new museum won’t have this problem!

I am ready for AI to be put to some good use and give us completely immersive (maybe VR) experiences of what Ancient Egypt and other historical periods would have looked like. Even the best CGI just can’t quite do it. Maybe this already exists.
