I like to imagine how loved and respected the colonial powers would have been if they’d brought only the good stuff (peace, infrastructure, just laws and good government) and not all the bad stuff (genocide, racism, dispossession and easily preventable famine)
The Brits spreading democracy before it was cool
The two are not mutually exclusive. The British Empire committed both great good and great evil, and to boil it down to just one or the other ignores a lot of nuance.
Who tf thinks the British of all people brought democracy to other places? I’ve seen a lot people claiming colonial powers brought technology, infrastructure or education to their colonies, but democracy is a new one.
Revisionist brits never claimed they gave India democracy as far as I know, they do claim to bring economic development more like (although the truth of the matter is a lot of what they built was used to supply Britain and their junior partners)

That has nothing to do with democracy.
America sucks pretty bad right now. But… I think britian in the 1800s was worse. They could get away with more.

Conceptually the globalisation that accompanied colonial expansion did ensure the spread of Western ideas like democracy, universal suffrage etc cetera. It also spread Maoism, fascism, free market capitalism and other less palatable ideas so let’s not pretend it’s an unqualified good.
The one unqualified good thing Britain did for India was uniting it and ending the milennia plus of endless war that had persisted since the death of Ashoka.
Isn’t that a part of true freedom and democracy.
