You know that when you buy the seeds? If yes is there no other stuff you can plant?

    2. Notmuchofanyth1ng on

So it’s not illegal, it’s a breach of contract with the seed company. They can source seeds elsewhere, but apparently it’s difficult. I don’t see how the seed companies would monitor seed use by farmers, and I suspect this is heavily embellished for content.

But for it to be “illegal” there would have to be legal repercussions from the state and those aren’t mentioned. So it’s just breach of contract with a supplier, not breaking an actual law.

And this is ASSUMING what this guy is saying is true.

Business idea, start your own seed company, sell without weird sale conditions, win over most farmers?

Edit: yeah I hear ya. Sad that it has to be that way. Farmers are one of the most important sectors we have. I wish they could collectively refuse the current system and have an alternative.

    4. el-conquistador240 on

This only applies to frakenfoods. Regular seeds are fine, these are patented GMO or these altered seed.

    5. This conflates a contract (which are negotiated) with the law. It’s not *illegal*, it’s a violation of the terms of their contract.

Still awful, but this is sensationalist.

    6. Being a small farmer is rough. Farming land is expensive, equipment is also expensive and on top of that the seed companies are not easy to deal with. I know farmers that own their own land and have second jobs to make ends meet.

Why is this not a business opportunity for farmers to develop their own ‘open source’ seeds?

This isn’t true it takes one Google search lol. Anytime you see a video done in this style just understand it’s incorrect in some way and look into it yourself lol

Farmers, by and large, grow hybrid crops and have for a long time, about 100 years. You can plant seeds from the hybrid crop but it does nor grow up as that type of crop. They buy new seeds every year.

Hybrid crops grow bigger and faster. For table crops, they taste better. They are more resistant to disease.

    10. So on brand for the USA. Everything in this country is designed to extract as much money as possible from individuals

“Oi, you got a license for those seeds”

      – An American if this was happening in the UK.

    12. dilldoeorg on

not really true. This only applies to gmo seeds.

you can replant whatever organic seed you want.

    13. Breach of contract is not actually illegal.

I’m not dying/saying this isn’t a totally dick move or anything but, ya. Not actually illegal.

    14. What’s to stop a new company from making their own seeds and not having stipulations. Sure the profit wouldn’t be near as high as a seed subscription but you’d have a lot of customers ready to go

    15. This is such a capitalist abnormality. There’s absolutely no logical reasoning for that kind of greed.

    16. Let me guess… This is far more nuanced topic than this 1 min tick tock video suggests

JFC. Just use Google and stop listening to these engagement-farmers BS.

      1. No, it is not illegal, unless it is GMO.
      2. No, 100% of US seeds are not GMO. Roughly, 55% are GMO.

I could go on, but I’d rather slap these engagement-farming clowns.

And this is why we are completely fucked as a nation. WAKE THE FUCK UP AMERICA!! Monsanto is evil, and are a monopoly on our food supply.

    19. I mean he’s not entirely correct here. You can definitely buy open pollinated corn seeds that you can replant. Not even close to 100% of seeds are genetically modified. What a wild thing to say.

honestly just feels like being wrong on purpose to get engagement. And here I am

Why I plant heritage corn from Mexico. Every season I get 100’s of lbs of seed corn that I use for the next years harvest. Thankfully, I’m not a commodity grower, but man…what a travesty. We’ve strayed so far from where we came from. The corn I grow isn’t sweet corn, or what we’ve grown up with to eat. It’s used for meal, or feed for our neighbors livestock. We trade, and it’s been a lovely community project in self-sufficient farming. I feel bad for those folks who don’t have an option to do this, and are locked into a system that forces them to sign contracts with these large seed companies. I think we’re getting close to the breaking point of they system.

Stop associating Agricultural bankruptcy with regular Chapter 11 bankruptcy, they are not the same.

Farmers do not go under Chapter 11 bankruptcy they do Chapter 12 bankruptcy which is a special form of bankruptcy for the agricultural industry it is a highly protected form of bankruptcy and offers unique advantages like higher debt limits, no creditor voting, easier asset sales, options to reduce secured debt and restructuring.

It is a highly privileged form of bankruptcy to protect the agricultural industry because farming is generally considered a high-asset, low-margin business. Farms go bankrupt all the time but they have certain protections that allows them to bounce back much easier than most. If these bankruptcy privileges didn’t exist in the farming industry the entire farming industry would been gone a long time ago.

    22. If they want to replant seeds then they shouldn’t enter contracts and take government loans

    23. Beneficial_Run9511 on

Virtually everything he said is wrong. It’s not a crime it’s a breach of contract. 100% of seeds are not genetically modified. If you want to replant your seeds don’t buy seeds from that company

whats even the fucking point with that apart from capitalism, I mean come on
