I think it’s poetic justice that after spending the whole Sino-Japanese war getting bamboozled by Mao, Chiang Kai Shek finally got one over on him on the way out the door

How about instead of “the great leap forward” it was “the great leap east” and Mao ordered all bath tubs in China to be converted into boats? It wouldn’t work, but less people would have died.

Navy and air forces are historically where the upper classes tended to pursue military careers so it would make sense their leadership would side mostly with the Nationalists.
