How about instead of “the great leap forward” it was “the great leap east” and Mao ordered all bath tubs in China to be converted into boats? It wouldn’t work, but less people would have died.

Navy and air forces are historically where the upper classes tended to pursue military careers so it would make sense their leadership would side mostly with the Nationalists.

And it was comprised of 50% nationalist defectors and 50% other classes of people that the Communist party didn’t like

PRC did build a fleet of wooden ships to carry out a landing but they ran into ROCS Chung Yung whose captain was running a sugar and oil smuggling business on the side and got wiped out.
