AFAIK, flying wings never caught on because of stability problems. Today, we have far more computing power that’s able to correct for that, as evidenced by the B2 bomber.
The previous goal of flying wings was to make them more fuel-efficient, since the entire fuselage is a lifting surface, but the only flying wing known to be in operation was built that way for a low radar signature. Is anybody trying to make flying wing carriers or passenger planes?
