Maybe they are doing it to prevent ice and frost buildup overnight? I use a towel for that myself.

Way easier to use and to keep glass inside clean. Maybe also better temperature control as sun rays are reflected outside the car, not inside. Some sun visors are designed to be used on outside, but not this one. Still, it will do it’s job.
9009RPM on
It’s actually more effective this way but most people put it inside to keep it clean/not stolen
PlayStationPepe on
This is easier than having to shove the shade in windshield area and then put the visors down. I’ve been using an umbrella style that I got from five below and it’s worked pretty well at keeping the inside temp down while I’m away from my car.

I love how it’s upside down because they think it looks like sunglasses!😎

In germany we use it so the winshield doesnt freeze in winter, outside is completely normal for me, would never have guessed that someone puts it on the inside😅

Kinda looks like it’s made to go on the outside

Our local gypsies put a duvet on the outside of their box trucks/vans, which apparently has the same effect.
They’re usually covered in unidentifiable stains so people won’t steal them.

Nice if you have a dash cam that gets in the way of a sun visor.

Winter anti frost ones always go outaide.

If it wasn’t for thieves, this is exactly how one should be used. Using it inside the car just traps all the heat between it and the glass, releasing it in the car. Try this in your driveway, you’ll be surprised.

Possibly to protect from hail.

Funnily enough, a german magazine tested ways to keep a car cool in the summer last week and the visor on the outside is WAAAAY more effective than having it inside.
katzevonstich on
People at my office do this because otherwise the sun reflects off the windshields in the parking area right into where everyone is working. Not only is having a sun glare in the eyes annoying, it raises the inside temperature of our office. Putting sunshields on the outside of the car stopped it and we didn’t have to sacrifice getting natural light and a nice view of the park.

If it’s stupid but it works, it’s not stupid.

Yeah, that makes sense as it’s more effective. People put it on the inside so it doesn’t get stolen!

This is the way in winter too. More efficient in summer, more effective in winter.

I’m surprised someone hasn’t come up with a roll up shade sort of thing that could be durably mounted to the car.

To all the people saying it’s meant to be placed this way, why does the manufacturer put a rear view mirror cutout instead of making it perfectly rectangular?

Guys. Use this in the winter on a freezing day. It will save you so much time leaving for work

I do this all the time, much simpler and much more effective. Best is one with flaps instead of those elastics.

Somewhat common for snow areas to have the outer one to prevent frost too. They also just toss small sections of rug/carpet on it for the same purpose lol

That sundshade is old and bulky, newer ones can be folded into a circle’ish and easily stand up with the vizors down.

More effective. Avoids the windscreen form being heated up, and thus also heating up the air in the car.
The windshield itself would be heated by the sun if the sun visor was inside the car.

I saw a Reddit post years ago about a dude working at NASA or something with rocket scientists and thinking all these brilliant people didn’t know how it worked only for one of them to finally explain to him that it stops the radiant heat from getting inside the car. Once it passes the glass, that heat is already inside the car and will cause the car to heat up. However, putting the reflective surface on the outside prevents that from happening.
carouselofcats on
Interestingly, this is how I keep my top-floor, ACless apartment slightly more reasonable during the summer—reflective insulation on the outside of all the windows. Works better cuz it keeps the heat on the outside.
(Obligatory I am not AI just cuz I used an em dash.)
