For me, the gaps were the horrible jobs I took to avoid starvation. I didn’t want anyone to think I liked that sort of work. Job experience breeds more job experience…

My jobs have traditionally been in facility management and logistics. I have a gap on my resume because I drove a cement mixer truck for a while to make ends meet after I got laid off. Having a CDL job in your history is like having cold sores at a speed dating event. It’s all folks can focus on so I leave it out of my work history along with having my Commercial Drivers License and several endorsements.
I remember one interview I had applied for a logistics management position that I was entirely qualified for. They started the interview with “I know you applied for the logistics spot but we saw you have a CDL so we are gonna pivot and interview you for the open CDL driving role instead.” Just unbelievable.

There was a medical situation preventing me from crushing it to my usual standards. So I had to take some time off until I was able to crush it at 100%, at which point I resumed crushing it full-time.

I did a mid life career change. It was incredibly hard to get a job because I was older but didn’t have work experience in my new profession (even though I went back to school for it). I couldn’t get experience because no one would give an older guy with no experience a job…

I just squeeze the job on either side of the gap. And boom, gap is gone. Not one person checks the actual dates. A resume is just a way to lie yourself into the interview chair, where you sell your abilities. If they catch you, then you admit you will do anything to make this happen.

Holy fuck this was me, covid hit and i didn’t want to work in a place where you had to wear a mask all the time and all the restrictions so i hibernated for 2 years.
Every job interview i had i got rejected cos i hadn’t worked for 2 years then why do you have a 3 year gap, why do you have a 4 year gap, cos you keep asking that fuckin question.

NDA, sorry, can’t disclose employer or activities other than it was at the federal level. It also won’t appear on any income records as the activities were classified.Â

I see you worked for a company for 7 years and eventually landed in a good middle manager position and then had 3 months of working as a delivery truck driver after the company you were working for got bought out and 95% of the staff was laid off. So that means all of your management qualifications are null and you’ll take $17/hr right?

I had a gap in my resume after college when I was taking care of my dad while he was dying from cancer. I received some very weird and mostly negative reactions from interviews where I told them the truth. It really seemed to be a negative for me in my job search.

AI took my job and all job listings for the last year require full adoption of AI. And criticizing AI just alienates me, preventing me from even being considered.
