As a police dispatcher, I just hang up whenever I get the feeling someone’s yanking my chain.
You don’t know what they called in claiming. Is it shitty? Yeah. But the blame is on the person who made the call, not the cops. Would you rather them respond to a call nonchalantly just in case it’s fake and risk something bad happening to someone inside? Or would you rather them treat it like any other call and respond accordingly in case there is actually something seriously wrong?
They literally HAVE to respond seriously in case the threat is actually real. Y’all would be crying ACAB if it was real but they didn’t take it seriously.
They have to always check just in case. Sometimes, there’s also little time, so they can’t go through a whole process to verify the claim first, they just gotta go

The thing is, hostage situations and gun violence in general are much more common and lead to much more death in the US than anywhere else (I wonder why) so I assume the cops can’t really afford to be picky about the calls, they have to respond as quickly as possible

It’s not really the cops fault, it’s the swatters fault.

Sending a massive response with zero evidence IS the risk. More cops being send that are afraid for their lives = more chances of one of them shooting. It has gotten innocent people killed before, and sending a few cops, responding with appropriate caution and skepticism, is ultimately safer.
I know they need to respond(even if I would argue that anonymous call alone should not give probable cause for a squad of armed masked men with automatic weapons to kick in your door, flash bang your toddler and shoot your dog), but it would be nice if while on their way they would call somebody with the access to a registry to check shit like who lives there and if false calls where ever made to that residence before. Streamers get swatted multiple times and after the third one that year it might be better to send an email than a squad of government sanctioned killers.
The fucked up thing is when is a school shooting situation they are waiting and “planning” like it’s Munich 1972. They must know these house raids are all for show and their are risking nothing
I love how somehow swatting works everytime and they don’t even question when they get called to the same house every 3 weeks and it’s always a false alarm, but every single time there is a serial killer or shooter there is like 5 years worth of suspicious reports and red flags.

I mean, a lot of the time they know it’s probably fake, but they have to take these things seriously. Plus, you all would just cry about the opposite if it was serious and they did nothing.
That’s typically why people who waste police resources with these phony swats face time in prison. They take this stuff very seriously.
