Context: back in the 1970s, with rising global coffee prices, causing a severe coffee shortage in East Germany. The East German government signed an agreement with Vietnam in the 1980s.
Under the agreement, East Germany invested around $20 million into the Vietnamese coffee plantations. Roughly 10,000 hectares of land were developed to grow coffee trees, once the trees matured and production began, half of the coffee harvest would be exported to East Germany.
By 1989, the plantations had started producing coffee, however the Berlin Wall came down and the collapse of East Germany in 1990 ended the agreement before the GDR could fully benefit from it. Despite this, the project helped elevate Vietnam into one of the world’s largest coffee producers, ranking second after Brazil.

Understandable. Even Communists appreciate a good coffee.
I suppose it made the Statsi less likely to be angry.

This feels like something I’d see on one of those “Explain the Joke” subs (I mean that in a good way).

Did East Germany have any investment outside non communist countries?
Like did they deal in investment or different industries, or was it a one time thing with Vietnam?
