    1. It gets me that John Brown was executed for Treason but Jefferson Davis, Alexander Stephens, and Robert E. Lee were not. We wouldn’t have some of the problems today if more Southern Traitors were executed after the Civil War.

    2. I love John Brown. The man genuinely believed God put him on this earth to take out slave owners. What an absolute badass.

John Brown is from my town- Hudson, Ohio. Lots of great history around John and Owen Brown. Badass is right.

    5. Huh, so there *is* another human being whose head is shaped like Lincoln’s.

Seriously though, what he experienced and tried desperately to rectify about this country makes him all the more beautiful!

On October 16, 1859, Brown and a heavily armed band of 21 followers (16 white and 5 Black men) raided the Harpers Ferry arsenal in Virginia (now West Virginia). His goal was to seize weapons, arm the local enslaved population, and instigate a massive uprising to overthrow slavery across the South. After capturing several prominent citizens and the armory, Brown’s men were surrounded by local militia. U.S. Marines, commanded by Colonel Robert E. Lee, stormed the engine house where Brown had barricaded himself, killing many of his men and taking Brown captive.

      **National Impact**
The raid and subsequent trial deeply polarized an already fracturing nation.

      ● The South: The event confirmed their deepest fears of violent Northern plots against their way of life, prompting a swift buildup of militias.

      ● The North: While some denounced Brown’s violent methods, many viewed him as a heroic martyr for the abolitionist cause.

He was not the first person executed for treason in the US. There were multiple executions during the American Revolution against loyalists plus the group of Irish American soldiers who defected to Mexico during the Mexican-American War.
