Wasn’t the whole point of the “New Left” thing to find the way to stay communist or socialist, while not being tied to either the USSR, or the PRC? I mean, there were surely plenty of idiots, but even more of sane leftists.

There was that Scottish Marxist, Malcolm Caldwell, in the seventies who was the staunchest defender of Pol Pot’s regime. Went to Cambodia, was murdered by Pol Pot’s regime.

I’ve seen people doing the same today while replacing USRR with Russia, not just tankies but a group of people that talk about some sort of multipolar world as It is the stronghold against Imperialism (America)
It’s kinda funny not gonna lie.

These lands were so misunderstood that they did not understand themselves

The origin of Palestine support is from that era too with Soviets supporting Palestine and US Israel. That has lived longer than the othersĀ

Russia is far right authoritarian and fascist, about as far from the ML Ideal as you can get. China has reached the primary stage of socialism, which is a big step. Iran is currently on fire and the current standpoint is ‘maybe do less of that’, and nobody knows enough about North Korea to really say /what/ their deal is. I doubt it’s as dystopic as we think, but it’s not as utopian as they want us to think.

And it worked, 1970-1980 people went to pension before 70 and had affordable housing.

I sincerely think they *are* misunderstood, but in the sense that most people don’t know much about them beyond what they receive from the news media. Of course, that doesn’t make these countries better, just far more complex *and* evolving.
