      His solution was for the colonists to identify which of the indigenous Caribbeans were cannibals (Caribs) and which were not (Arawaks). Caribs were enslaved, while Arawaks were forced into paid slavery. Certain villages were identified as Carib or Arawak based on whichever classification benefited the colonial economy.

      Spoiler: there is no archeological evidence that the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean practiced cannibalism.

      It’s wild to me that people use the “they were a man of their time” justification for Columbus. Even though the dude was imprisoned during his time for his heinous actions.

      Then again, the people supporting most racist glorifications aren’t exactly historically literate.
