Everything the skier did before ducking the rope is acceptable practice for backcountry/slack country skiing. Those gates exist to denote backcountry zones that require skiers to carry avalanche gear like beacons, and probes.

I can’t say whether this was a dangerous activity, as the footage is fisheye. With that camera, even walking to a grocery store would look dangerous too.

Skied the Vallee Blanche this past season, which is where the boot pack along the rope goes… it’s unnerving at the top, but beautiful and amazing once you’re off the ridge. Ducking the rope and heading down that face in particular is just bananas and makes me want to puke.

I mean it look like a wonderful descent, but to be honest, this is a plan for disaster. This is would take a long time and by the midpoint they won’t be any light in the sky. I really hope this guys plan his stuff and bring a headlamp
