Going all the way to Miklagard just to deface a church balcony with runic graffiti is peak Viking behavior.

The Swedish Vikings also established the Kievan Rus as well.

EDIT: Why the hell am I getting downvited for mentioning the fact that the Rukids are of Swedish Viking Origin?

      Not this nonsense again…

Norwegian Vikings mostly plundered and colonised Scotland and Ireland. They did very little discovering, outside Erik the Red, Leif Erikson and few others.

Swedes were also opportunistic ivaders – they sieged Constantinopel several times, and conquered Slavic settlements all over the Rus (named after them).

    4. Funny thing is, that the Anglo-Saxons made up a major portion, and sometimes the absolute majority of the Varangian Guard.

If you like Vikings, read The Long Ships, by Frans G. Bengtsson. Bloody good fun!

Throughout 400 years of its existence, Varangian Guard almost never was made completely out of Norse warriors. It had Khazars, Normans, Slavs and even Turks.

The idea behind it wasn’t about the nationality, but about having personal guard made out of people, that had no previous connections inside the Empire, so they wouldn’t try to push the family’s agenda.

The sun rose over the wasteland
As far as the eye can see
Sand fills the vast plains of Serkland
      It’s vultures jeering at me
But they can circle until they drop dead
I have not come this far
To end, but to pursue my own thread
      To join The Varangian Guard

Varangian Guards are so much better than Praetorians it’s not even close.
