This letter was written by a man named “Roddie”. He was a soldier serving with Troop B, 125th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. At the time of writing this letter, his unit was serving in Germany. The letter reads:

      “ *Germany*
      *March-15-45*

      *Dear Harold:*

*Before I go to bed I’ll answer your letter that I received today. I surely was glad to hear from you and that you are alright. My mail has been coming in sort of slow the past few days. However, when I do get mail, I get a half a dozen at one time.*

*It has been nice here. Warm and quite a lot of sunshine. This afternoon I got so sleepy that I had a heck of a time keeping awake. It must be spring fever, don’t you imagine. Anyway, no matter how sleepy I get during the day, I don’t get a chance to sleep. I don’t think the Germans do either so I guess I can stay awake.*

*Harold, if it were safe over here, I’d like to have you along with me so you could see some of the sights. The towns are sure torn up by the bombs and tanks. I know you would get a kick out of these people and the way they do things. Believe it or not, they still use ox teams to plow and pull wagons with. I saw one old guy today with one ox and one horse hitched together. Are you a pretty good shot Hank? I could use you for a gunner when I go out driving! Seriously tho, I’d rather have you in the good old U.S. where I know you are safe.*

*I sent Grandmother a picture of myself and Ruth and Larry. I only had six made so there wasn’t enough to go around. I told her to get some more made from it so your folks can get one. They aren’t very good of me but you can use it to scare mice away!*

*I guess Forest likes his job alright. Its been quite awhile since I’ve seen him tho so can’t tell you for sure. I ate in his kitchen shortly after he was made mess Sgt. We had sow belly and beans!! One of these days I want to look him up again. He isn’t so far from me now.*

*Its too bad your puppies died. They must have froze to death. When I go home, Larry wants me to get him a puppy. He has never had one but then they couldn’t keep one in the apartment. When I do go home I’ll get him a puppy and a pony. That is another thing he wants. He is getting big enough now to ride one now. Ruth sent me his report card and he is doing good in school. At least every six weeks shows a lot of improvement.*

*Well Hank, I’d better close and write to Ruth and Larry. I got two letters from them today. You be a good boy and study your lessons. Write to me again soon and tell me the news. Give my best regards to your folks and the best of luck to you.*

      *Lots of Love,*
      *Roddie.* “

I have another letter written by Roddie in June of 1945,(I will post it at a later time) so he would survive the war. Unfortunately I have no other information about him.
