Spartan Warrior, C. 510-500 BCE, Greek [3760×8160] [OC]

The formidable reputation of the Spartans, Greece’s most aggressive fighters, comes through in this diminutive, six-inch high figure. He wears a Corinthian helmet, and the diagonal folds of his close-fitting cloak wind tightly around his body. The unusual direction (left to right) of the crest on his helmet suggests that he may be an officer, as most images of Spartan warriors show the crest oriented front to back. Greek and Roman armies were well organized, highly trained, and well equipped. In exchange for a grueling life, soldiers were honored with glory and respect, and their deeds were immortalized in epic poems, vase paintings, and bronze statues. Typically, small bronze figures like this one were placed in sanctuaries by worshippers who laid them close to altars or cult statues as gifts to the gods. A warrior may have used this example to offer thanks for divine favors or to ask for future assistance.
