This is a killdeer. They nest in rocky areas.

One neat fact about killdeer moms are that if the nest is threatened by a predator mom will pretend to have a broken wing and limp/flop away from the nest luring the predator away from the eggs.

Please give mom and eggs a wide berth.

NOTE: they aren’t murderers of deer, their song sounds like they are saying kill deer kill deer kill deer

to be fair, if I was that bird, I would be angrily chirping at people nearby too.

These birds nest on the ground, and will often flop around like they are injured, just to lure predators away from the eggs.

This is like those people who buy a home in a busy section of town with a well-known nightlife club and concert scene and then complain about the noise.

Had one build a nest on a construction site delayed construction for a few weeks because they are a threatened species and where the nest was it was right on the footing line of the building foundation.

I once saw a NYC pigeon build a nest with 3 sticks in a triangular pattern, and then lay an egg in the middle of it all, right beside an active driveway for a college. Truly magnificent creatures.

These things are all around airports. Get so mad when you are towing a plane near their poorly chosen nest

Its a kildeer. Thats normal for them. Get close enough and it’ll bolt and act like its injured to try and lure you away from its nest.

It’s a killdeer! They act injured to lure you away from their nests. Put a milk crate over it so they can still access it but nothing runs over it.

    10. Awe poor bird. She didn’t know it was a bad spot and is all stressed out now

    11. Killdeers are up there next to pigeons on the dumbest location to lay eggs type birds.

Watch it for a minute, they do this hilarious dramatic fake broken wing performance if you walk towards the eggs. They deserve an Oscar tbh

I remember being chased away from a nest on the ground while doing fieldwork in crop residue but I can’t for the life of me remember what species it was. Just that it was loud and aggressively protective.

    14. One of these birds nested in our soccer league parking lot. I placed some cones next to the nest and the next week there was a no parking sign. A couple weeks later we saw the mom and babies running around the parking lot. That momma bird was very protective.

It would be worth putting a caution sign up. There are two eggs in this photo. They would be impossible to notice if the Killdeer was not there.

Can you call a wildlife rescue place to rehome it approprately? Say, a bit further from the pathway?

We mark nests with a flag so they dont get run over by car or lawnmower. Eggs will hatch in 3-4 weeks

Their choice of where to lay eggs is often very stupid, they waddle away acting injured to lure you away, and they’ll sometimes do laps around your house making their repetitive squawks.. for hours.

I can’t stand them, personally. Saw one the other day, prepping a spot right in the middle of a consistently traveled path in the horse’s paddock… so one of their hay nets was place next to that spot to make it clear it’s a stupid spot.

    19. Killdeer are both sweet, hilarious, and honestly a bit dense. She’ll fake a broken wing to get you away.
