Hiroo Onada wasn’t stupid, he was a serial killer with a convincing excuse, the actual details of his story are incredibly suspect.
He was sent a ton of messages from people he knew pre war, and papers and documentation about the wars ending.

Onoda was not the last holdout to surrender, though he was the last Japanese. Teruo Nakamura, original name Attun Palalin, a Taiwanese Aboroginal soldier, was the last one to surrender in December 1974, in Morotai, Indonesia. Unlike Onoda, he just went off into the mountains and built himself a hut, which was accidentally discovered by a pilot in mid-1974. He was arrested by Indonesian soldiers and preferred to go directly to Taiwan. He died five years later.
