I don’t get the meme but I loved the sparkly bits of the fish on the cover as kid

    2. Great_gatzzzby on

Rainbow fish pisses me off cus the message is literally to give away the scales so people would like you, instead of giving them away to make others happy. It’s such an easy fix.

I remember seeing this cover as a kid but I don’t remember my mom reading this for me or even reading this myself

    4. The_Best_Guesst on

Reading rainbow fish as a kid gave the same message as the giving tree, which to me said that you must give up some of yourself for the sake of others until you have nothing left to give, and I hated it both books so so much

    5. I hate this fucking book
Oh yeah rip off pieces of your body and give them to people so that they’ll like you. Great message….

    6. I know someone “fixed” this book and changed the ending. I just can’t find a link to it. Was pretty good

I remember someone reading it to me faintly but I forgot the whole plot.

    8. Controversial book in my house. My wife loves it. I despise it. She sees it as a book about sharing. I see it as a book about body mutilation to please other fish that don’t deserve your friendship.

I know I’ve read the book, no recollection of what happens in it though

    10. children’s version of the Communist Manifesto planted by the government btw

    11. That book had a horrible message for kids the only good thing about it was how sparkly the scales were

This book is absolute dog shit. Reread it as an adult and try to coherently explain why the message isn’t terrible.

I only vaguely remember the book. What is the meme creator sulking about?

Awful book, just like The Giving Tree. Teaching kids to let people use and exploit them without drawing boundaries. Another fish comes up to him and asks him for something special of his, he says no, and the fish leaves? Clearly, this isn’t a friend. He just wants something from you.

    15. “Give away what makes you unique and special, otherwise no one will like you. Bribery: It’s the only way to make friends.”

Some of you never revisited this book as an adult and it shows. There’s much better ways to demonstrate sharing.

While I loved this book as a kid (mostly because it was pretty) I do think the message is quite shit as an adult.

I did read it but I barely remember anything other than its cover.

I read this book to my kids once and then threw it away in disgust. Absolutely horrible message. If people don’t like you give them things until they do? Even parts of your own body!? Hell no. Fuck that book.

    19. underwaterknifefight on

No, that book is shit. I read it to my kid for the first time and was shocked at the themes of harming or destroying yourself to make selfish people around you happy.

This meme sucks as much as the book

    20. Bleeding away all that makes you special to make your bullies happy… Great lesson. /s

    21. No_Vermicelli4753 on

It’s a story about how giving in to someone that’s repeatedly begging your for valuables will lead to you buying friends.

      Great.

    22. GhostOfSagan on

When I read this to my son I emphasize the lines that describe how the rainbow fish initially thinks he’s too beautiful to play with other fish, then he’s sad because he’s lonely, then he learns that giving things to other fish makes /him/ happy and how having friends makes /him/ happy.

I definitely see why people might not like this book, but there are some useful lessons in there.

    23. Mount_Pessimistic on

Still less problematic than the pout pout fish which glorifies verbal abuse and sexual assault.

    24. I’ve read both books and played the video game. Which was pretty good from what I remember.

Edit : I’m starting to think most people here read it as adults because I did read it as a kid and it was just a cool book. I wasn’t looking much into it because, you know, I was a kid.

Hey op, can I have a bit of your skin? Like, you have so much of your skin, I don’t have any of your skin. It’s only fair!
