Primarily during WW1, the Ottoman Empire carried out genocides against various minority ethnic groups. The most well known is, of course, the Armenian Genocide, which resulted in the deaths of an estimated 600,000 – 1,500,000 people, but the Ottomans were also responsible for the Greek genocide (est. 300,000–1,200,000 casualties) and the Assyrian genocide (est. ~250,000 casualties).

The death counts are a debated subject among historians, hence the massive ranges.

This meme is technically a remake of one I made a couple of years ago. That one only mentioned the Armenian genocide, and I wanted to make one referencing the other two major ethnic cleansings from around the same time that the Ottomans were responsible for as well.

See why do genocides have to target all the dope ass ancient ethnic groups?

    4. Until Turkey and Turks accept their history and escape their ultra nationalist narrative, they will never move to the future.

Well considering the fascination with the ottomans, this extremely violent imperialistic empire that is hated by every nation it formerly subjected for a reason, I do not have any hopes really.

Funny you mentioned word genocide. Today is Circassian genocide commemoration day.

“We didn’t commit any genocides. But if we did they deserved it”

Not being an apologist for anything. But ‘just existing’ is inaccurate, the Armenians did collaborate and fight for ottoman enemy Russia.

    8. While it’s true that the Ottoman empire committed genocide against its Christian population in WW1, I think it’s unfair to the legacy of the Ottomans to focus on those horrible last few decades and ignore the prior centuries of (by medieval and early modern standards) peaceful tolerance of minorities.

Ottomans managed to salvage what is left of the empire at the end of ww1. Losers claim ”Genocide” for every battle they lost now. They thought getting a fat slice of land from a dying empire would be easy peasy.

That’s late-stage Ottomans in the 1700’s and especially 1800’s. Orthodox clients were fairly servile and ethusiastic clients and subject initially during the 1400 until the early 1700’s. The Ottoman Empire was carried North and West from the Balkans by its Orthodox subjects. Aside from some administrators, religious and commercial and military elite, Croatians and Hungarians for example actually met relatively few actual Turks-

That would be holocaust. These gencocides were reactionary genocides. This isnt denying it just a fact.

What are you talking about? That never happened…but they definitely deserved it.

Not to say they had it coming, but something like 30% of the population of the Ottoman Empire circa 1914 were refugees from genocides/ethnic cleansing in the Balkans and Circassia. So as far as the Ottomans considered things they were getting revenge. Of course when everyone decides that they are going to collectively punish a group of people to revenge those people are going to want revenge too and the cycle continues.

You have got people in the Balkans swearing bloody revenge for shit that happening 1000 years ago because there is always a new round of shit getting stirred. The fact that a 19th century Greek and Turk had more in common with each other than either of their ancestors didn’t really matter when there were scores to settle.

    17. Here is the thing. The christians did not just exist, in the later centuries of the empire, they absolutely dominated commerce, navy and business in the empire. Cities like Constantinople and Smyrna had thriving communities of greeks and armenians who, despite being legally inferior to muslims, were much richer and paid a tax to not be enlisted in the army. The ottoman state needed these christians to modernize, but when it lost all its provinces and was just left with Anatolia and the middle east, the Young Turks and Ataturk later decided that anatolia must become a turkish homeland no matter what, and this could only be achieved by cleansing anatolia of minorities and creating a new turkish middle class which would fill the void that the minorities used to occupy. It is tragic, but it goes beyond religious or ethnic persecution.
