This photo shows a US Fifth Army sergeant eating his Thanksgiving dinner under a makeshift shelter in Italy, November 1944.
During WWII, the US military pulled off an incredible logistical feat by delivering hot turkey dinners to millions of troops worldwide-even those on the muddy, freezing front lines of the Gothic Line.
Meals were cooked in rear mobile kitchens and rushed to the trenches via jeeps, trucks, or mules just to bring a piece of home to the soldiers.
Note: Original photo by the U.S. Army Signal Corps, later colorized.
