The key lies in a protein called AIM (Apoptosis Inhibitor of Macrophage), discovered by Dr. Toru Miyazaki. While cats naturally produce AIM, they lack the ability to activate it effectively. This deficiency leads to the gradual buildup of waste in the kidneys, the leading cause of death in domestic cats.

Great, now my cat can judge me and look disappointed in my life choices for three whole decades.

If this actually becomes affordable and safe, cat owners everywhere are gonna lose their minds , imagine getting almost 30 years with your pet instead of 12-15. That’s genuinely huge.

In other news people keep finding new and interesting ways to kill each other.

    5. Any post with a random fake picture and a caption like this is most likely bogus

Is there an official article for this? I’m very quick to judge such images for just making stories up with no source, but as someone who got a cat at 12 who lived for 18 years, I’d have done anything to get another 10 years with her if she remained healthy.

She was the absolute best cat in the world, Knew all our bedtimes and would stay with you until it was, then meow occasionally until you went. Always ended up curled up with me last purring her little heart out. Love that cat so much.

Ive been reading through their website and it doesnt really mention other age related health conditions such as arthritis.

It seems to just be focused on kidney function.

Are we potentially just going to extend the lives of animals in pain?

Id rather the time and money spent on trying to cure issues such as resorptive lesions.

    8. No way I’m putting up with my cat an extra 15 years.

Joking aside, please remember that loss is part of the contract of loving someone.

Death is promised and expected, and the thought of delaying it may bring comfort but you have to ask yourself how you are making use of the time with your pets TODAY, and not a potential tomorrow that may never manifest.

And when one pet dies, it makes room for you to love another critter that needs a home. Death is not a bad place. It’s the painless peaceful sleep.

My cat died yesterday, this post just made me so depressed damn. Happy for other people who get to try it though.

I’ve been keeping an eye on this for years. My baby is 18 and she was diagnosed with kidney disease back in 2022. The original estimated timeline was set for a 2025 release. Really hoping 2027 happens and she can hang on until then!

Did some scouring. Not too knowledgable about this, but I don’t see any mention about public availability for now. It’s probably not the “miracle life-extending drug” you’d typically interpret from the image’s captions.

    12. My dad had a cat live to over 18 years old, she was such a pleasant cat, they were good together, she had him well trained.

Her last 2-3 months were very difficult, she struggled to walk, slept most of the time and lost her appetite. We pleaded with my father to have her put down but he was too closely connected.

I’m sure there are cats that have lived beyond 18 but this is my, personal, frame of reference. I sincerely hope that if they are able to extend the lives of these cats that it’s done in a responsible and humane fashion

Not news. Japanese cats are getting the shot for a few years already.

    14. 25 years old cat, extremely old and barely walking, knowing that he still got 5 years of “life”:

      I’m tired boss

Does it make the year 10/30 look like 5/15? 30/30 look like 15/15? I’ve seen health cats reach near 20 look haggard as hell. To make them live to 30 and be suffering a third of that just seems like torture.

Look how crypt keeper like people look at age 110. Imagine they inject you to live to 140. I wouldn’t wish that on my enemy.

    16. Ok_Perception9815 on

Unless it targets the cat’s kidneys or reduces their chances of cancer… Those are the two biggest issues aging cats have…

    17. Dapper-Challenge3829 on

I saw this news for as long as a couple of years and I have NEVER heard anything about it anywhere besides those random posts on social media. I just don’t believe this true.

    18. Thanks_Naitsir on

Sounds like bs. You don’t just double the lifespan of a creature with a single magic shot. Every life is complex and you would need to rewrite it’s entire genetic code to make this possible.

    19. Tankeverket on

True or not what would this actually mean for the car, is it a healthy 30 years or 15 additional years of anguish with a frail body

    20. Old_Customer5426 on

How cruel. It’s selfish to force an animal beyond its natural life for your comfort and amusement. Totally ashamed of people putting people’s wants against animals’ needs. Pets, zoos, testing, farming, breeding, fighting, even conserving to an extent; all human-centric activities. We don’t deserve them.
