I don’t know exactly what they’re doing in schools now, and I hope they’ve found some psychological, studied approach that actually gets results, but in my experience nothing stops a bully faster than fighting back.

I had that happen in middle school. Got jumped by a group of 5 on my way to a band lesson. School’s zero tolerance policy means we all got a weak suspension. Luckily I have good parents who backed me up, had several meeting to yell at various administrators all the way up to the superintendent. Other than sitting in those meetings, I had an extra week of vacation that year.
