Zimbabwe had the highest literacy rate in Africa when Mugabe took power and then proceeded to print money until a 100 trillion dollar bill couldn’t buy a loaf of bread. The economic speedrun was genuinely historic

I think about Mugabe government sometimes. First, he fought a racist segregation system. I would have supported him.
But then he turned into a crazy dictator with a horrible economic policy.
It’s something like the Arab Spring. You support fighting those horrible systems only to end up in a bad state.

      Edit: fought

Economically a joke, yes, but it’s always worth remembering that Mugabe was and still is seen as an overwhelmingly positive figure to many Zimbabweans. It’s easy to get caught up in the jokes but he is a historical figure who requires a great deal of nuance. His legacy is both unbelievably negative and heroically positive.

Dinner with Mugabe by Heidi Holland is a very highly recommended read.

Mugabe may have made Zimbabwe a shit country, but most importantly, he ruined the Zimbabwean Cricket team 😔

Fun Fact: Robert Mugabe banned white players from representing Zimbabwe in Cricket and back then, Zimbabwe was experiencing a rapid increase in their cricket team’s capabilities and their team back then was 10/11 white. When he banned the whites, they protested and eventually ended up quitting the sport with some moving elsewhere like England to pursue whatever was left of their careers there, the funny bit is that the one black guy on that team *also* joined in the protest and *also* ended up quitting and moving to Australia(not very certain) where he now sings songs or some shit? The guy’s name is the one and only Henry Olonga.

Also, due to an entire golden generation of Zimbabwean Cricket essentially quitting, the system essentially collapsed and it is yet to recover, Zimbabwe Cricket(their governing body) only paid off a good majority of it’s debts by *2020*.

Thanks for the context Op, and extra info from others.

    7. He took over the system he inherited but the only change was switching who benefited and who didn’t
