Slotin was later to be one victim of the “Demon Core,” where he received a massive burst of radiation by accidentally putting the core in a critical state while manipulating its tamper with a screwdriver. He died of acute radiation poisoning within a couple of weeks.

Visible over on the right, strapped down, is the uranium cylinder that holds the plutonium core for inserting into the device.
