I bought a shirt for someone after a DM concert and they turned it down, because they were too popular.

When did they become mainstream?

I was 13 when I saw the video for Enjoy the Silence, and I was fascinated.. absolutely glued to the tv, the melancholy synths, the beat, David Gahan walking around mountains dressed like a king. Loved it! DM still ranks high in my Spotify end of year wrap up every year, though I’m not sure how because I do listen to a lot of other bands now.
Was DM popular in America before that song?

Didn’t they become more mainstream in 85 with People are People?

In 1990/91 I wore a Bart Simpson “Don’t Have a Cow, Man!” shirt and was given the option to turn it inside out or take a 3 day suspension.
Bart Simpson.
I took the 3 days …not because I’m a rebel …but because I have sensitive nipples and the picture would have chaffed them raw.

Depeche Mode was always pop music. I’d understand if you said, for example, that it was a Joy Division or Sioux and the Banshees t-shirt.
