You all are joking, but Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a big problem right now. It’s a prion disease. It’s not *currently* known to affect humans, but no one wants to be patient zero.
Don’t eat deer unless you know it’s been tested.

I know there is a good reason for this, but just knowing there is a bin full of severed Deer heads, just chilling out in the open, is very weird.

Prions aren’t just incurable, they are near impossible to destroy.
They resist acid, weathering, heat, cold, can just lay on the ground for decades and still be viable.
It takes incineration at over 1000°C to be sure a prion is gone
Prions are incredibly fucking scary.

So how do they link the head to the hunter? The last time I deer hunted in Minnesota we were asked if we would donate the head, and we had to provide contact information. And was told we’d be contacted in two weeks if there was a problem. If not, we were to assume it was safe.

so if someone wants to eat the deer but they are waiting on these results, can they safely go ahead and butcher the animal? like would a processing place have to do some type of serious equipment cleanup if they found out one tested positive? (i dont know much about prions except they are terrifying)

Prion diseases are absolute nightmare fuel. Just read the wiki on them. They don’t transfer from deer to human…YET. Don’t be patient zero. Test your meat, and then eat. Seriously I had to calm myself down after reading about them. I’ve purposely locked the info in a mental vault because it’s that scary.

CWD is no joke… I’ve watched it creep across state lines and even called wildlife when I seen a deer which I thought was infected. There’s deer leases backed up against most of my property lines so I see deer all year round crossing all my property heading towards feed plots set up on those leases. Wildlife has a few cams set up on my strongbacks that seem to be the more busy routes and every now and then one of the officers will have to come out for regular maintenance. They’ll stop by and visit for a cup of coffee and let me know how things are going, and lately they’ve all been pretty bleak.
I’ve never seen one of these head stations though. I’ll have to ask how they do this process.

Huh! Is that how the people who were giving away that wasting disease hamburger knew the deer had it?
