Thermal convection. Land absorbs and radiates heat much faster than water. The island surface warms the air column above it more than the surrounding sea does, creating a localized rising air mass. As that air rises, it cools until it hits the dew point, at which water vapor condenses into a cumulus cloud. The sea stays clear because the ocean surface temperature is relatively uniform and the air above it is thermally stable.

Second: geography. Even a modest topographic rise forces horizontal wind flow upward as it crosses the island (just like clouds forming off of mountain ranges). That lift reinforces the thermal convection, pushing air past the condensation threshold.

Nope, the island actually create the clouds because they heat up and drive moist air upwards where the water condenses out and creates the cloud.

That last Island the cloud looks like a rooster wearing sneakers with a dust cloud behind lol

    4. The water cycle in full effect! It rains, then evaps, then condenses, then it rains, then it evaps, then it condenses, then it rains…

One of the cues Pacific islanders used to navigate. They’re pretty much a permanent fixture.

    6. I heard Bob Ross was adding puffy little clouds to his painting today.

    7. well, the islands create the clouds through convection and moisture from the trees, but cool video for sure!

Islands be like….save me clouds from the sun

Scientifically I don’t know why this happens, but I know it’s not a coincidence.

Māori people used this principle to find land across the seas. The original name for New Zealand, Aotearoa, means “Land of the Long White Cloud”

    11. a lot of clouds are generated by trees. you see these kinds of clouds form over islands with trees because of the moisture they release from their leaves.
