      So you are probably wondering how I got into this mess. Well after Spain expelled its Jews in 1492, weird medieval marriage politics resulted in the King of Portugal also expelling the Jews. However, he then decided to turn around and actually ban Jews from leaving and instead have them forcibly converted or else be executed (resulting in most “converting”). Coincidentally despite Portugal now having no Jews for centuries afterwards Jews kept appearing elsewhere in Europe who had been living in Portugal. Weird.

      I recently learned about the complex “underground railroad” that many crypto-Jews from Portugal used to get across Europe and escape the long arm of the Inquisition. Fascinating stuff!

      Believe you’re talking about Manuel I (aka Manuel the Fortunate). He did this to secure a marriage alliance with Isabel of Aragon, the eldest daughter of Isabel I of Castile and Fernando II of Aragon (aka The Catholic Monarchs).
