    1. But how will you know it’s medieval era if the characters wear colourful clothes, the sun is out and the grass is green?

Being dripped out in battle was seen as a status symbol since ancient times up until camouflage became the norm.

But hollywood seems to think that audiences wouldn’t take it seriously if the color palette isn’t just 3 shades of grey and brown.

    3. The medieval era was full of colour, especially battles since it was often necessary to know who was who. How did we end up with everything being dull and grey in media of this period?

Unpopular opinion, I like medieval films with dark and gloomy colors. I’m not saying that it’s realistic, but it looks cool.

    6. Hollywood loves their grayslop filters.

No you don’t understand it shows how bleak and dark the setting is.

To be honest it’s a self feeding cycle the more medieval movies remove the periods color the more people start believing color to be out of place causing studios to remove color. ad nauseam.

Atleast it’s not the Vikings or Mongolians, according to Hollywood all those guys looked like a 1980’s metal band.

Since when are actors in charge of costume design? If the production didn’t hire historical accuracy consultants, that’s not their fault, they’re there to act.

Where are your goddamn helm and colours?!

(Me, everytime I watch a historical movie)

    11. Okay, but can you guys drop the movie name and if it’s good? I’m looking for a handful of medieval movies, comedies can apply

Outlaw King made a good attempt at straying close to Scotland during the war against Edward Longshanks and it looked awesome. Like for the battle scenes, it literally achieved the historical purpose of heraldry and bright color, the battlefield is full of mud and you’re trying to spot someone and yup, there’s Robert with the red lion on a red field on his shield, and there’s Douglas with the white stars on blue.

    13. God forbid we depict medieval times as exciting, colour filled times instead of putting the depresso espresso filter and make sure everything looks like shit

Once you’ve read actual medieval history you’ll never stop wanting to beat Hollywood directors and costume designers to death with your bare hands

To be fair, Laurance Olivier’s version back in the day was incredibly drippy and with the consultation from the Wallace Collection.

That is more on the director than the actor, OP.

(Unless the director is the actor, of course)

    17. It’s an art style that fits the story and characters. I like realistic depictions but it would not fit here. Like have you seen the film or are you getting mad over screenshots 😭😭

Ironic, consisering that how inaccurate that movie is, yet it features some of the most realistic knightly combats ever put on screen.

Having colorful and accurate clothing would be super expensive for scenes with many actors. gray/black can be cleaned easier and you don’t have to check up what kind of heraldry you put on the clothes. (are there copyrights on that kind of things)

they want to save money and create the atmosphere

To be fair, Hollywood has always been the mirror of the empire. In this case, it’s the mirror of its decadence, lazy, grim and arrogant…

    21. FinancialReserve6427 on

it’s less who is more accurate and more mocking the actor (i have no idea who he is) for not being manly enough.

That “random reenactor” seems to immitate the art and armour worn by prominent actor Laurence Olivier.
