    2. Hey, I know this one! Wasn’t the context that it takes so much resources to feed and shelter an elephant that being given the responsibility of taking care of one could drive someone to financial ruin?

    3. Being bestowed with a white elephant was an honor, but also a heavy burden, as the elephant was costly to keep and maintain. And since it was a gift from an important person, it couldn’t simply be given away, killed, or returned to the wild. You would be stuck with it. Eventually, “white elephant” came to be slang for anything that is costly and provides no benefit. The term survives in “white elephant gift exchanges” held during the holiday season, and through the Oakland Athletics baseball team, which was called a white elephant by manager John McGraw when they premiered as the Philadelphia Athletics in 1902. When the A’s won the pennant that same year, then-manager Connie Mack decided to adopt the elephant as an unofficial mascot.
