The asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs hit the earth with more power than all our nuclear weapons combined. It wiped out all megafauna in almost an instant. Only took 9 million years for megafauna to return. On a geological time scale 9 million years is nothing. Once humans are gone megafauna will roam the earth again. Chernobyl is a perfect example. Radiation is too high for humans so the area is empty, but wolves and bears have returned. There are now packs of radiation resistant wolves roaming the place.
