It sure started with the Belgians.
Anything and everything just to absolve people of their own horrible actions so long as you can blame Europe or the west in general.

If you think Central Africa wasn’t a nightmare before any European arrived, I’ve got a bridge for sale. The Europeans just, happily and brutally, took advantage of that existing evil. It in no way absolves the Portuguese and Belgians for their evil, but it’s foolish to act like they started it.
A bit like the silliness of thinking pre-columbian America was some lovely land full of environmentalists.
There were no local government institutions in the Congo before colonialist atrocities so it’s more logical to assume the lack of them is natural in the Congo.
It was definitely a peaceful utopia before those evil Europeans showed up right?

Yet Britain was willing to plunge Europe into chaos all because Germany decided to take a short cut to France. If you look up all the atrocities committed by countries like Great Britain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, USA, and Russia. In 1914 Germany actually was the least problematic. They just wanted a little empire for themselves like what USA and the rest of the European powers. It’s not their fault that they had the strongest land army in WW1 and Great Britain was getting jealous.
Oh look what the Germans did in Belgium. What about what the Belgians did in Africa. Germany wasn’t cutting of limbs of children and enslaving people.
