Peter the Great was so obsessed with Dutch shipbuilding and culture during his Grand Embassy that he worked incognito in Dutch shipyards to bring their tech back to Russia
fun fact, a lot of russian words relating to seafare are dutch loanwords!!!
What I don’t understand is why French language and culture will dominate the Russian court and culture for the 18th and a part of 19th century while Peter was more influenced by dutch, german and even english culture.
