It’s just descriptive writing. 42cm would be more objective, but also far drier.
A pizza is something you’ve had your *face* near. The writer wants you to not just know that this thing’s eyes are far larger than yours, but to feel it viscerally as well.
The other comparison, a school bus, was chosen for similar reasons. You’ve not only been close to bus, you’ve probably been *inside one*. Suddenly you’re thinking about how small you are. Small and edible.
