Was a damn good deal. We got a profitable plantation colony in exchange for a shitty swamp

Suriname for New Amsterdam was an amazing deal. Maybe even the best deal of all time. Everyone already knows we are great at making deals and i agree i think we are great at making deals too we are the best deal makers of maybe ever such a good deal

NYC was really just a trading swamp by that point. Even places like Albany and settlements on the Hudson River were more profitable because of the fur trade.
It wasn’t until the 1820s with the Erie Canal that New York City actually managed to explode in population. Before that it was comparable to every other Northeast/Mid Atlantic City.

It’s not just Suriname, but also islands in Indonesia from the British that let the Dutch to effectively monopolise the nutmeg trade

Inhabitants pleaded with the mayor of new Amsterdam that he should not turn the stand off into a siege as the town would simply be destroyed, and the townsfolk just wanted to keep their trades intact, no matter what flag the town flew.
But i mean haha, a colonial power, asserting itself can you imagine?
How did it become a colonial power?
