I mean, that’s not a moat around a castle, that’s a castle on an island in a lake.

If I build a castle on an island in the ocean, does that make the ocean my moat?

    3. Moats are just ditches. Most of the time not even filled with water. That’s a lake, not a moat

    4. That’s a lake. In the times when castles served a strategic purpose most moats were in fact dry

    5. I will say… yes obviously the castle is on a lake. But there are PLENTY of examples of flooded moats in history as well.

Do you mean I’ve been using the wrong word for the Pacific and Atlantic Ditches this whole time?

I mean, technically, lakes are just really big ditches filled with water.

I definitly recommend going to that area in both summer and winter, it’s really beautiful.

Unfortunately, the castle was largely destroyed and nearly all of the interior and fresques are lost forever…

The issue with moats is standing vs. running water.

If you make a castle on an island or have a river along one side as a “moat”, that works. There’s no standing water. You don’t have mosquitos, pests, etc. and the shit and piss you dump over the side goes away over time.

If you have a ditch around your castle filled with standing water, it will often dry out or you’ll need to make a castle in a bog. Either way, you’re going to have sanitation issues and probably insects using that water for reporuduction.

It’s less a castle with a moat and more a castle sitting on its own island in the middle of a lake.

Trakai castle spotted in a wild, wowa. The funny thing is, there is a moat inside the castle, around the big building.

I honestly can’t think of a castle near me that DOESN’T have a water filled moat.

The two nearest, Sæbygaard and Voergaard, both have water filled moats.

Sir, that is a lake, water moats existed but usually when the water was running through it, stagnant water, that also receives most if not all of the castles sewage, in a time without modern medicine, or plumbing, quite possibly makes up for the easiest siege of all time, from a distance that is.

    14. How do you even besiege this castle? You can’t exactly cover the entire lake shore with troops

      Moats were just ditches

Is this really an efficient design though? Seems like there is plenty of space for attackers to land. The advantage of a moat is that the castle wall is usually right on the edge of an incline, so it is very difficult to approach.

OP will look at an oil rig in the middle of the North Sea and say: ‘Behold! A moat!’

    19. TheEdgeofGoon on

I mean, aren’t both technically true? Moats were oftentimes just ditches and sometimes people just built castles in the middle of fucking lakes, and I guess you can call those moats too?

    20. who_knows_how on

Famously America was safe in the world wars because of their impressive moats

    21. FrontalLobotomyFan on

yo I’ve been there. Sick but the museams is very odd. Lithuanian museams love massive walls of text

In all this moat discussion, I haven’t seen anyone mention the other type of moat: ones stocked with bears and other wild animals

    23. nostalgic_angel on

Castle? Do you mean noble’s vacation home that would not be besieged once in three lifetimes?

    24. There’s outliers with this not being one of them becuase it’s a lake. But yes ditches have always been used as a defence since well before over 10k years ago like cmon just dig a ditch no one can get us was very common moats are just a fantasy thing usually
