Context: in order to dispel accusations of corruption and embezzlement due to paying obscene amounts of money to James Reynolds, Alexander Hamilton decided to publish the Reynolds pamphlet, in which he explained that he had been instead his own private money to fund an affair. Most people probably know about this because of the 2016 musical, but every single time that I am reminded of it, it just baffles me how overwhelmingly stupid it is. The man couldn't have thought of any other way to get out of the accusations besides nuking his career. The title is a lyric in a song from the 2016 musical which shares the namesake of the pamphlet

I actually read the Reynolds Pamphlet and it’s less of a Dear Penthouse letter than Lin-Manuel implies it to be. Like half of it is him going “SHE SET ME UP”
If only this kind of stuff would ruin people’s chances of rising to power today…
At least he was honest.
“Be accused of corruption after rebelling against a corrupt and tyrannical government and building a new system where it’s supposed to not happen, undermining that system itself” or “get your adultery exposed in an era when it’s common for men of the elite to have mistresses as marriage was not always a thing done out of love”
The choice was pretty clear
“His poor wife.”
This was back when people cared about stuff
I don’t think hamilton ever actually wanted to be president
