It’s more useful for the popular perception and social changes it brought on than any actual authenticity.

The idea that WWI generals were butchers is a myth that needs to die. They were forced to invent modern warfare as we know it in the span a few years in the most hellish conditions imaginable. The reason why the Entente kept doing all those attacks in the Western Front for just inches at times was because they had to keep an endless amount pressure on Germany to prevent them from knocking Russia out of the war sooner.

The UK actually made its’ generals command the troops further away from the frontline, because most of the generals **fucking died because of their proximity to the enemy**

The French general staff says they keep losing large amounts of French soldiers to German defenses and when they get low on men they just recruit more French soldiers
