It didn’t feel right to leave them there as they might be precious memories for someone. If anyone recognizes these folks please let me know and I’ll try to get these photos to them.
Thats really sad to find someones memories at the landfill, I hope you can find the family

Could be sad. Could also be that these people want nothing to do with these memories. Which I guess is also sad in a way.

When I was an apartment manager, we were sometimes left to deal with situations where someone has passed on. One time, we had a tenant who committed suicide and the family was emotional and told us they didn’t want anything and that we could just dump everything in the trash.
So, I inspected the apartment before calling in a contractor to trash it out and update it for a future tenant. The deceased man did not have much, but I kept finding tons of family photos, cards from special occasions, school awards and other memorabilia. I made a last ditch effort to the family, kind of pleeing that I felt awkward just throwing away all the items with sentimental value. The family finally relented after I described some of the items in detail. Along with claiming the cherished items, the family donated some medical equipment to charity and opened up the apartment for neighbors to take anything they might find useful.

This post just made me realize how many pictures I am going to have to go through and toss when my parents pass away… I will absolutely keep a bunch but there’s dozens of photo albums and probably another 10k just in the photo store envelopes. My kids have never even met 80% of the people in those photos so a choice 100 or so clearly labeled is my plan. Anything more and it becomes a burden.

More than likely they were thrown away because they were duplicates. Done this three times now

When I moved a couple of years ago, I decided to get rid of my photo albums. I scanned the pictures I wanted and tossed the rest. Maybe something like that happened here.

You know, sometimes people throw stuff out for a reason.

Or maybe the family was completely dysfunctional and dropping the pics at the landfill was part of the healing.
But you do you…

It’s possible that they scanned them all and tossed the originals.

This is the digital age – people scan old photos and then discard the originals. We keep all our old family photos digitally now.

All my photo albums will probably end up at the landfill when I die. No family.

There was a post in r/ventura about somebody losing their storage unit and all of their childhood memories. Could be linked.
