Meh, after working so hard to get that specific sentence you kind of get the idea that he just wanted to kill himself. If you keep demanding that someone stab you, bugging them to do it over and over again, you don’t get to be shocked if they finally just do it.

Nietzsche would call Socrates and what he represented as life-denying.
>”Socrates wished to die. Not Athens, but his own hand gave him the draught of hemlock; he drove Athens to the poisoned cup.”
Interpreting Socrates last words as “life itself is the disease, and death is the cure”.

Le context:
Athens recently had a new government installed by Sparta run by a student of Socrates. This student was a tyrannical despot who led so many political purges the Spartans had to come back and uninstall him. Despite this, Socrates kept singing his praises and how great his government was while it lasted. The new new government told him to STFU but he refused, so they charged him with “corrupting the minds of the youth”. Socrates continued to piss off the government during his trial, to the point more people voted to execute him than found him guilty in the firstplace
