Is there some weird ToS that you agree to when buying a printer now? Otherwise that should be a very easy lawsuit.

Fuck HP. Go and buy a Brother or Epson. That’s my solution to this problem. Go and throw the HP into the ewaste

That’s true, if you’re using their “Instant Ink” subscription ink. You can buy your own though. I know she says she bought her own ink but BS. What’s the subscription for then?

Allegedly?

They keep adding stuff like that and sell you the printer for $40. And people are like “$40 for a printer? Count me in!”

I knew this for a while. So I got a Brother instead.

HP has been running a subscription policy for years… but this one was different… you’d buy a printer for 200 PLN with test inks… and then it turns out the new inks cost 150 PLN per set! And the non-original replacements don’t work.
I always say… if you buy cheap, you buy many times!

Bought b&w HP laser printer because it was stupid cheap. the most basic unit, no wifi, no BT, just usb. Plugged it in, had windows install generic drivers and never allowed nothing of HP software to be installed. Sorry, spyware.. bloatware? idk how you call non-hardware from HP.
It’s been 4 years and it is still on its starter toner. Never a single issue. Prints like a champ.

WHY ARE PEOPLE STILL BUYING HP PRINTERS?
This subsscription model should never be a thing ofc, but like: It’s not really new? This has been a thing for a few years now.

And after the last set of software patches, the HP printer won’t allow off brand ink.

I purchased an HP office printer for $500. One year later, after realizing the error of my ways I bought a Brother, which has been great.
I sold the HP to a church group for $150 and felt guilty that I was ripping these poor bastards off.

The amount of times most people use a printer these days as well, you’ll be paying for something to collect dust until you need it again.

I you Google you find a way around the monthly subscription but it is not that strait forward. Especially my elderly customers love to order HP even if we tell them what will happen and in 9 of 10 cases we send the HP printer back because of this…
People are idiots. HP makes bank with idiots. It is that easy.

I had one where the colored ink got low, and despite there being enough black ink it wouldn’t let me print in B&W unless I bought more colored ink. And those ink cartridges are expensive…

I bought an Epson Eco Tank ET4800, I will never go back to anything else. This thing is awesome and for $25 i can get all new tubes of ink and they last for ever. Had this for almost a year now and have only refilled it once. I use it to make MTG proxies and its about 13-15 pages worth of full color artwork. It’s easily worth it.
Edit: The ink replacements I bought arent even Epson brand, so thats also a plus too.

I suspect she’s not telling the entire truth. She likely got something (printer, ink) cheaper or free because it was on subscription and now she’s trying to make it sound like she was cheated.
I’m not going to defend shitty companies, but I also don’t have much patience with shitty consumers. If you buy the cheapest option, it’s gonna be shit. There are and were good printers but they were expensive and people just wanted cheap crap. So they got cheap crap.
But if you agree to a subscription, don’t pay, then yes the thing might stop working. If you lease a car and don’t pay, they’re taking it back and you can’t whine about how it’s your car, in your driveway.

This is the reason why my HP printer is gathering dust in the attic. Their support told me I should have read the license agreement on the packaging.
Now I have a different printer, and I will never buy an HP product again in my entire life. Strange business model.

I was told a long time ago brother makes thier printers with metal parts and that makes them much easier to repair, and if you get a printer for long term use, expect to need to repair it.
