      Stay-behind networks

      Gladio refers to the Italian stay-behind network of NATO, a structure created right after World War II in case of a Soviet invasion, set up by the CIA and MI6 as a NATO entity reporting to SHAPE. Deployed in sixteen European countries, these clandestine networks were meant to maintain armed resistance behind enemy lines in the event of a Soviet occupation. The soldiers were trained by the SAS in England and the Green Berets in the United States.

      In Italy, the Communist Party was a growing threat to Washington, so Gladio recruited without scruple former fascists and ex-Nazis. According to a document issued in 2000 by Italian parliamentarians, Gladio would have taken part in the “strategy of tension” with the help of the P2 lodge, aimed at preventing the PCI from accessing executive power, and carried out deadly attacks—thanks to our American allies…

      In France, the networks La Rose des Vents and Arc-en-ciel, formed from a core of former resistance fighters from the BCRA and SOE, were managed by the SDECE through its Service Action. Members of the Milice, LVF, or Charlemagne Division were integrated into some operations in the name of “anticommunist logic.” In some countries, the networks were used in peacetime to influence domestic political life by preventing left-wing, communist, or socialist parties from coming to power.

      Under Mitterrand, Pierre Marion undertook between 1981 and 1984 to dissolve the NATO networks and replace them with a national structure under the exclusive control of the DGSE, independent of Washington. The existence of these structures was publicly revealed in 1990 by Giulio Andreotti.

      Outside of unfounded conspiracy theories promoted by unreliable sources like Daniele Ganser, Operation Gladio was not proven to have ordered acts of right-wing terrorism in Italy and other countries. That’s a fiction.

      Gladio is the holy grail of conspiracies. A secretive network of terrorists, composed of “ex-“fascists, organised by the CIA with money from the Catholic church and handled by the mafia. On top of that, the highest ranking members of the Italian Government were inducted into this conspiracy by a faux-Masonic lodge.

      But it’s largely overlooked for the simple reason that it was conspiracy of right wingers whose goal was to destroy the political left.
