Old Vennel, Glasgow. From Thomas Annan’s photograph series of ‘The Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow’ 1868. The work he produced is absolutely fantastic, full of lots of ghostly figures, the rest of the series is linked in the comments.

Photographer Thomas Annan was commissioned by Glasgow’s authorities to document the last of the city’s slums, which were considered to be the worst in Europe. The series is [here](https://www.utterlyinteresting.com/post/thomas-annan-s-photographs-of-the-old-closes-and-streets-of-glasgow-1868)
Great pic! Any other?
Very nice 👌
This is what I’m here for.
I’m from NZ and when we were being taught in school about why so many working class Scottish and English families signed up to join ships sailing to the colonies in NZ around this time, facing a very long sea voyage (3-4 months), an ongoing land war between the Crown and Māori (with bloody skirmishes and different settlers and Māori tribes and factions fighting on both sides), strange unfamiliar birds and bugs everywhere, endless mud, and a lifetime of very hard work to farm the land and build settlements, with basically 0 chance of ever seeing England or Scotland again and only talking to loved ones back home via a couple of letters a year?
The teacher showed us photos and illustrations exactly like this, like “here’s why they signed up”
These are very interesting, even though I have never been to Glasgow. It’s hard to imagine what it would have been like in these alleys because I can’t imagine what it sounded like. In today’s world, if you were walking in an alley in the middle of a city, you would hear the nearby traffic and HVAC systems.
