Same strategy as NAFTA.
Iran has a chance to do the funniest thing. They could negotiate terms identical to the deal they made with Obama that Trump tore up. This administration is dumb enough that they probably wouldn’t recognize it during negotiations. Then when it’s signed, they could come out saying that after all this pointless death and destruction, we’re right back where Obama had us to begin with.
Ketchup would definitely be on White House walls after that one.
It’s crazy, when you have actual adult negotiations with people and show that you are both respectful and worthy of respect, you can wind up with results that are better for everyone.
If you open the negotiations by trying to kill *all* of their leadership, not to mention more than a few helpless children, and then proceed to lie to the world about the results of conversations that never took place, the adversary will be *a lot less* open to compromise.
You’ve literally phrased it as “give me what I want or I will end your civilization,” which is pretty much exactly what the Iranian (and North Korean and Russian) government has been telling its people for decades. You’re just confirming that they were right, which not only cripples your own ability to negotiate, but also ruins our credibility for all future attempts.
Shhhh, if you say that, he’ll just perpetuate the war. You have to coddle his ego like a baby.
