The “Night Stalker” was Richard Ramirez, a serial killer who terrorized Los Angeles in 1984–85. Police released his photo to the public, and shortly after, people in East LA recognized him in the street.
A group of residents chased him down, beat him, and held him until police arrived. He reportedly tried yelling “Hail Satan” during/after his arrest.

Satan might have had his soul, but East LA definitely had his teeth.

Nothing brings a community together quite like a neighborhood-wide jump session on a serial killer. The OG street justice.

The real story is absolutely hilarious. I’m going off memory so I might be getting some of the details wrong.
Ramirez was visiting a cousin and was outside of LA when someone snitched on him and his photo was distributed to the media. The police were looking for him at bus stations, but since they were focused on outbound buses, while Ramirez was returning to LA, and he slipped by.
Soon, Ramirez noticed people looking at him oddly, and when he entered a corner store, he was confronted by his face, on the front pages of the newspaper with the words “Night Stalker Identified”. He ran out, and now people were straight pointing at him and shouting “El Matador (the murderer). So he ran.
He first tried stealing an unlocked car, but two men living nearby noticed and beat his ass. He then attempted a carjacking by attacking a woman as she was leaving for work. Her husband noticed, grabbed a fence post and began whooping Ramirez’s ass, sending him running. By then, word had spread out, and a mob of people was after him, including one of the men who had stopped that initial theft and his sons. At some point the mob caught up with Ramirez, someone called the police, who managed to break up the mob, and arrest Ramirez. They didn’t know they just arrested the man who had been terrorizing LA for years, thinking it was some carjacker who messed with the wrong people.
Edit: double checked and corrected a few errors

My aunt had a goth band touring around that time and was shocked to learn he was a fan of hers. He’d go to her shows and try to hang with her band, but just came off a bit creepy and awkward so never really got close to anyone in her group.

My aunt, r.i.p., lived in East L.A. at the time. She was accustomed to treating injured men that landed on her porch with stab wounds.
She called my dad a few days afterwards and told him that she had heard a commotion a few blocks away. Initially, she thought it was that the gangs were fighting each other. Until she found out on the news that it was that they had caught the night stalker and the neighbors were beating the crap out of him.
