The painful moment when you realize facts matter less than feelings in most arguments

Most people can’t be changed on their opinion. But with sound arguments you can at least convince them that their arguments or supported reasons are bad.

For example if someone thinks birds aren’t real, I probably won’t convince them otherwise. But I can at least point out that their stated source isn’t going to hold up as legitimate to anyone other than them.

      And belief perseverance

Essentially humans are dumb and even if you prove their strongly held beliefs are wrong they won’t believe you. And they’ll go seek out evidence to prove their claim. There may be a 1000 cited/peer reviewed sources that contradict their belief but they’ll find the one source with no merit that backs their belief and point to it.

We are in the age of idiocracy.

It goes both ways. A lot of times people’s facts are cherry picked and facts that undermine the argument are ignored. You can construct any argument you want if you carefully pick facts and ignore other ones, all without technically lying.

Same, it kind of sucks. I remember growing up and trying to talk to my parents with facts and data points, and they’d make fun of me and complain that I always had to be right all the time. Kind of stopped talking to them after that.

Plus the fact that these people that 🙄 don’t listen to facts, have absolutely no knowledge of what terms they are using and what they actually mean.

If you love FACTS so much then look at the whole human history and acknowledge the FACT that FACTS play a minor role in decision making.

I have seen so many body cam videos of people that share this exact mental illness

I think the illness is called autism. Thats what I got. Being logically consistent is for the real ones.

Strong belief vs weak belief. If their belief is tied to a sense of identity, just save yourself the effort and walk away.

Have you changed your mind on that belief, now that you’ve experienced it not working that way?

Just because it’s true doesn’t mean it isn’t highly, highly selective. Keep your nose out of others’ business.

I love the assumption that all of their facts and data are the correct ones. I’m sure no one ever has confidently misinterpreted or misunderstood data before.

I’ll never change my mind. I’m dug in, regardless of the facts before me.
