He was drunk during his vice-presidency inaugural speech in 1864 after drinking three glass of pure whiskey without water and Lincoln was in “utter dismay,” and senators were mortified.

Not just a buffoon, actively malicious. Grant did what he could to repair the damage when he became president, but by then so much momentum was lost.

I’ve always wondered if reconstruction could have resulted in full or near full racial equality or if a full civil rights movement would still be necessary no matter what. Similar to fully eradicating confederate ideology and the lost cause myth; could it have been done or was it inevitable even in a best case scenario.

Not that anyone would want to, but damn they could have made a scarily accurate Andrew Johnson biopic with Tommy Lee Jones.

My professor described Johnson as a Southerner who absolutely loathed the upper-class of plantation-barons in the South [and thus the Confederacy], and that fact characterized most of his administration, where he prioritized getting back at the Southern aristocracy than any idea of equal rights.

idk why Lincoln had such a soft spot for Tennessee, but I assume that it’s partly why he went with Johnson

Instead of making freedmen into a political tool the elites should have sent them to Liberia or Sierra Leone.

I mean, in regards to not prosecuting Confederate leaders, Lincoln had already stated at the Hampton Roads Conference that the only Confederate leader he intended to pursue charges of treason against was Jefferson Davis. There wasn’t really any intention to go after other leaders like Stephens, Benjamin, Beauregard, or Lee.

Truthfully, the 10% plan was also not really a great plan. It didn’t provide meaningful protections for newly freed people and generally was very hands off, prioritizing a quick peace. While Lincoln vs. Johnson is a Hydrogen Bomb vs. Coughing baby type situation, the only President that had meaningful plans for reconstruction was Grant, who actually prioritized civl protections for newly freed Black citizens.
